Why can't I change the serving size of a photo-scanned meal?

Last updated 28 июня 2026 г.

Nutrola stores AI photo and Describe Food meals on a fixed 100g basis, so there is no portion box or unit switcher like barcode products have. To change the amount, edit the calorie or macro numbers directly, edit the ingredient list, or tap Fix Result and describe what was off, for example "I only ate half of the portion."

Why is there no portion box on a photo meal?

The serving and unit picker (serving, g, oz, ml, fl oz, package) only appears for products scanned with Scan Barcode, because those come from a large product database with a known package and serving size that Nutrola can multiply.

An AI photo scan or a Describe Food entry has no fixed package behind it. Nutrola estimates the whole meal it sees and stores it on a fixed 100g basis, so there is nothing for a portion multiplier to scale against. That is why the photo result screen shows editable numbers and ingredients instead of a serving-size box.

These estimates are produced on Nutrola's servers and are meant to be edited, so adjusting them is expected, not a workaround.

How to adjust the amount on a photo or described meal

You have three ways to correct an AI meal:

  1. Edit the numbers directly. On the result screen, tap the calorie value to open Edit Calories, or tap a macro to open Edit Protein, Edit Carbs, or Edit Fat, then type the corrected value. Edit a meal's calories, protein, carbs, or fat by hand
  2. Edit the ingredients. Open the Ingredients list to change an item (Edit Ingredient), remove one, or tap Add More to add something. Nutrola recalculates the totals from the items. Edit, add, or remove ingredients in a scanned meal
  3. Use Fix Result. Tap Fix Result and describe what was wrong in plain language, such as "I only ate half of the portion." or "It was a small size, not a large." Nutrola re-analyzes and updates the meal. Correct an AI meal with 'Fix Result' (tell it what's wrong)

For "I only ate half" cases, Fix Result is usually the quickest path, since you do not have to recompute each macro yourself.

When does the portion and unit switcher appear?

The portion field plus the unit options (serving, g, oz, ml, fl oz, package) appear only for barcode products from a large product database. For a packaged food, scan its barcode instead of photographing it so you get true portion math and unit switching. Liquids show ml and fl oz in place of g and oz. Logging drinks and liquids (ml / fl oz)

If a barcode is not found, that gap comes from the product database rather than your phone, and Nutrola offers to describe the item instead. Barcode won't scan
